Assamese Living in Aotearoa

Nearly 200 of us here today share a connection to Assam, either through our heritage or cherished ties.

The Assamese community in New Zealand, comprising individuals from Assam (northeastern region of India) as well as those who maintain close ties with the region, is gradually making its mark in the country.

Assamese culture is a blend of various ethnicities, languages and religions, creating a diverse and dynamic cultural landscape. To preserve their identity, Assamese expatriates in New Zealand often come together to organise cultural events, festivals and gatherings.

Cuisine is an integral part of Assamese culture, cherished by both the Assamese community and New Zealanders. Assamese dishes such as ‘Masor Tenga’ (sour fish curry), ‘Aloo Pitika’ (mashed potatoes with mustard oil and onions) and ‘Pitha’ (rice cakes) offer a taste of Assam’s culinary delights in New Zealand.

Despite the physical distance from Assam, the Assamese community in New Zealand maintains strong connections with their homeland through community gatherings and social media platforms. These connections serve as vital channels for sharing news, updates and memories, bridging the geographical gap.

Assamese immigrants in New Zealand contribute actively to the country’s social, economic and cultural fabric. Many are skilled professionals working in sectors such as information technology, healthcare, education, communications, primary industries, agriculture and engineering, among others. Their expertise enriches New Zealand’s workforce and contributes to its development.

In addition to their professional contributions, Assamese immigrants engage in community service and philanthropic activities, volunteering at fundraising events, organising cultural events and supporting newcomers. Through these efforts, they play a significant role in fostering solidarity within the Indian community and beyond.

Despite the challenges of adapting to a new environment, the Assamese community in New Zealand remains resilient, upholding its cultural heritage, building friendships and contributing meaningfully to their adopted homeland.

Their presence adds to the multicultural tapestry of New Zealand, showcasing the diversity and richness of human culture and community.
