The Assam Society of New Zealand serves as a community organisation catering to individuals of Assamese and North-East Indian descent, as well as those intrigued by the natural and cultural wealth of the Northeastern states of India.

Established with the primary objective of providing support and fostering a sense of belonging among its members, the society plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting Assamese culture within the Kiwi context.

At its core, the Assam Society of New Zealand functions as a support network for immigrants of Assam, offering practical assistance and a sense of community to newcomers as they navigate the challenges of settling into a new country. 

Through various social gatherings, events, and initiatives, the society aims to create a welcoming environment where members can connect with one another and share their experiences. 

A highlight of the Assam Society of New Zealand’s calendar is the Rongali Bihu celebration, marking the Assamese New Year, held in the month of April. This annual event serves as a meeting point for the community, providing a platform for individuals to come together and rejoice in their shared cultural heritage.

Cultural preservation is a central focus of the society’s activities. Despite being geographically distant from their homeland, members of the Assam Society of New Zealand remain deeply committed to preserving their cultural heritage.
