Assam Society of New Zealand (ASNZ)
The Assam Society of New Zealand serves as a community organisation catering to individuals of Assamese and North-East Indian descent, as well as those intrigued by the natural and cultural wealth of the Northeastern states of India.
Established with the primary objective of providing support and fostering a sense of belonging among its members, the society plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting Assamese culture within the Kiwi context.
At its core, the Assam Society of New Zealand functions as a support network for immigrants of Assam, offering practical assistance and a sense of community to newcomers as they navigate the challenges of settling into a new country.
Through various social gatherings, events, and initiatives, the society aims to create a welcoming environment where members can connect with one another and share their experiences.
A highlight of the Assam Society of New Zealand’s calendar is the Rongali Bihu celebration, marking the Assamese New Year, held in the month of April. This annual event serves as a meeting point for the community, providing a platform for individuals to come together and rejoice in their shared cultural heritage.
Cultural preservation is a central focus of the society’s activities. Despite being geographically distant from their homeland, members of the Assam Society of New Zealand remain deeply committed to preserving their cultural heritage.
The society also seeks to promote cultural exchange and understanding by engaging with the broader New Zealand community. Through open events and collaborations with other cultural organisations, it provides opportunities for Kiwis to learn about Assamese culture and traditions, fostering mutual respect and appreciation.
In addition to its cultural celebrations in Aotearoa NZ, the Assam Society of New Zealand actively participates in charitable initiatives and community service projects. Through various fundraising activities, its members contribute to the betterment of society, with a particular focus on supporting initiatives in Assam.
In doing so, they embody the values of compassion and social responsibility, making a positive impact both locally and globally.
